Negotiate Better with FBI Investigator Chris Voss

#017 Meet Chris Voss
When bank robbers, kidnappers, and terrorists held someone hostage, the FBI called Chris Voss to negotiate their release.
He worked in the FBI Crisis Negotiation Unit for 24 years and served as the FBI’s chief international hostage and kidnapping negotiator from 2003 to 2007.
He’s also the CEO of The Black Swan Group Ltd, and co-author of the book Never Split the Difference.
Some things Chris and I discuss:
- The communication strategies therapists and FBI negotiators share
- How to use “labeling” to negotiate and how it helps you reach a deal
- How to communicate by “mirroring” and why it works
- How to prevent your ego from ruining a deal
- How to get over the fear of negotiating
- How to negotiate a good deal without hurting the other side
Quotes:
“A great negotiator would come to the table, looking for information, as opposed to trying to carve out a position.”
“If they have a better idea than you do and you reject it because it wasn’t your idea, then your ego just cost you money.”
