Why would someone confess to a crime they didn’t commit? Or why would someone join a cult? Most of us think we’re too mentally strong to fall for brainwashing, but subtle forms of persuasion might already be shaping the way we think, feel, and act—without us even realizing it.
In this episode, I sit down with historian, professor, and author Rebecca Lemov to explore the psychology of brainwashing and how it shows up in modern life. From social media algorithms to toxic relationships, Rebecca explains how small, seemingly insignificant choices can shape the way we see ourselves and the world.
Some of the things we talk about are:
"Coercive persuasion emphasizes some of the trickiness and interest of brainwashing, which is that it's not simply coercion or force applied to someone like in torture...but it also has persuasion and the elicitation of cooperation by the person involved.” – Rebecca Lemov
"Facebook altered the emotional tone of users’ newsfeeds—some got more positive posts, others more negative. The result? People’s emotions shifted to match their feeds. It’s proof that emotional manipulation can happen at scale, without us even realizing it."– Rebecca Lemov
"Beliefs follow emotion. And so when we've demonstrated those tiny little choices that almost seem like they're not choices... they're all feeding these devices that are monitoring, measuring our own behavior and feeding back to us material that will then be changing our emotional states as well as our behavior."– Rebecca Lemov
"If you're not aware of your programming or if you smugly believe that brainwashing would never happen to you, or you would never fall for that, that is possibly a sign that you could be vulnerable."– Rebecca Lemov
