216 — 7 Ways to Heal Trauma Without Going to Therapy

May 30, 2025
Mentally Stronger Heal From Trauma Without Therapy

Research shows 70% of us will experience trauma at least once in our lives, but many won’t seek therapy to work through it. Whether it’s because therapy doesn’t feel right for you, it’s not accessible, or you want to supplement it with additional strategies, there are many ways to recover from a traumatic experience.

From drum circles to spending time in nature, research shows you don’t have to talk about trauma to heal from it. There are practical and effective ways to help you regulate your emotions, calm your nervous system, and work through the pain in your own way.

Some of the things I discuss today are:

  • Why traditional talk therapy isn’t the only path to healing (and sometimes, not the best one).
  • How drumming or theater can help release buried emotions.
  • The surprising ways caring for animals or gardening can soothe your nervous system and promote healing.
  • The specific physical activities that release trauma.
  • The creative outlets that can open up paths to recovery.

Key Takeaways:

  • Alternative Therapies: Strategies like drum circles, community theater, and equine activities offer unique approaches to trauma healing beyond traditional talk therapy.
  • Creative Expression: Activities such as dance, art, and music can unlock emotions and aid in processing trauma when words are insufficient.
  • Nature’s Healing Power: Gardening and caring for plants provide a meditative experience that can have significant mental health benefits.
  • Movement and Mindfulness: Practices such as Tai Chi and Qigong help reconnect the mind and body, improving emotional regulation and resilience.
  • Trauma and Physicality: Recognizing trauma’s embodiment in the physical self opens doors for recovery methods involving movement and tactile engagement.

Notable Quotes:

“Certainly not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD, but many people will.”

“Rhythm can heal. Research has repeatedly shown that drumming has the ability to lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and regulate emotions.”

“The truth is, trauma doesn’t just live in your mind. It also gets trapped in your body.”

“Dancing can help you reconnect with yourself and release tension that words can’t always access.”

“When people are grooming their horse, or just being around their calming presence, they start to calm down themselves.”
