People are not born inspirational. Everyone has the ability to cultivate the skills necessary to inspire others. So whether you want to inspire your kids to change their behavior, inspire your friends to live out their dreams, or inspire your colleagues to take a risk, you have the power to do that once you know how.

Adam Galinksy is a psychologist, professor at Columbia Business School, and the author of a new book called Inspire. Dr. Galinsky’s research on inspiration reveals that there are communication strategies and leadership traits that can be applied to parenting, friendships, and relationships.

Some of the things we talk about are:

  • Why self-reflection is such a powerful tool for inspiration
  • The one thing you can do to amplify your influence today
  • How to increase understanding, reduce conflict, and enhance your effectiveness
  • The communication strategies that will help you inspire
  • The leader amplification effect and why it’s important to understand
  • Why it’s important to inspire others

Key Takeaways:

  • Self-Reflection as a Tool for Inspiration: Reflecting on values and past experiences fosters personal growth and enhances one’s ability to inspire others.
  • Sharing Credit Amplifies Influence: Acknowledging and sharing achievements with others can enhance your influence and promote mutual respect.
  • Perspective-Taking Enhances Understanding: Practicing empathy and looking at situations from other people’s perspectives can defuse conflicts and enhance leadership effectiveness.
  • Communication is Key: Emphasizing clear, empathetic communication can prevent misunderstandings and create a respectful environment.
  • Mentorship and Empowerment: Encouraging and empowering others leads to stronger, more inspirational leadership.

Notable Quotes:

“On average, force is an inappropriate way to lead people because force creates counter forces.”

“There’s a universal continuum between being inspiring and being infuriating.”

“When we share credit, we actually elevate ourselves.”

“Anyone can inspire us… our children can inspire us as parents.”

“Compliance works well in the short term and that’s why we get addicted to it, but over time it wears off.”
