111 — Redefine Your Self-Worth and Rise Above Societal Expectations with Author Kara Loewentheil

May 27, 2024

There are a lot of societal pressures for women to act a certain way. Some of these pressures are subtle while others are more obvious. But the messages women start receiving at a young age can take a toll on their self-worth.

When Kara Loewentheil became an Ivy League graduate turned women’s rights lawyer, she realized the reason she still didn’t feel good enough was because she had bought into some of the messages about how women should be. Now, as a life coach, podcast host, and author, she’s showing women how to take back their brains. Some of the things she talks about today are how to deal with body image issues, how to stop depending on approval from others, and how to take back your time.

Key Takeaways:

  • Women often internalize societal expectations, leading to a constant need for external validation and an adversarial relationship with their own bodies.
  • True self-acceptance involves forming an unconditionally loving relationship with oneself, akin to the affection shown to a cherished friend.
  • Cultivating a positive relationship with one’s body goes beyond traditional concepts of body image and requires deep reflection and a shift in perception.
  • External validation is fleetingly satisfying; lasting self-confidence is built through self-developed, authentic belief systems and positive self-talk.
  • Incorporating mindfulness and intentional practices can help women reclaim their time and prioritize self-care over people-pleasing tendencies.

Notable Quotes:

“Your body is the physical animal home that you live in, right?”

“I think part of the problem is that women are socialized to constantly be assessing and evaluating ourselves.”

“The only way to have lasting feeling, like feeling, like grounded self-confidence, is to change your thoughts about yourself.”
