You’ve heard people say you should step outside your comfort zone. But you may have underestimated just how important that is. Staying too comfortable might actually be killing you.

The fear of discomfort might cause you to eat too much because you don’t want to feel hungry. Or you might stop exercising the minute you start to feel uncomfortable. And, of course, you might do hard things because you fear you can’t tolerate the discomfort.

While eating healthy, exercising, and exposing yourself to healthy stress feel uncomfortable, the alternative is worse. Being unfit and unhealthy is even more uncomfortable in the long term.

Paul Taylor is an exercise physiologist, nutritionist, and neuroscientist. He’s also the author of Death By Comfort.

Some of the things we talk about today are:

  • How comfort could kill you
  • The healthy stressors you should be purposely exposing yourself to
  • The benefits of cold water and heat
  • The one nutrition rule that everyone should follow
  • The amount of exercise that will help you stay healthy
  • The strategies that can help you start embracing discomfort today

Key Takeaways:

  • Hunter-Gatherer Genes Mismatch: Our bodies are still wired for a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, which means modern sedentary behavior and processed foods can have detrimental impacts on our health.
  • Benefits of Exercise: Regular exercise activates stress response proteins, releases a cocktail of feel-good neurotransmitters, and has been proven to prevent or treat 26 major chronic diseases.
  • Cold and Heat Exposure: Brief exposure to cold and heat (like cold showers and saunas) can stimulate stress resistance proteins, providing metabolic and anti-inflammatory benefits.
  • Low Human Interference Diet: Consuming foods that have been minimally processed and are as close to their natural state as possible promotes better overall health.
  • Temporal Discounting and Willpower: Understanding that we often prioritize immediate comfort over long-term benefits can help in making conscious decisions to improve our lifestyle.

Notable Quotes:

“Our children are the first generation predicted to live less time on this planet than their parents.”

“You have one body, and that has to last you your entire lifetime.”

“Exercise is good for us because fundamentally, it is a stressor.”

“Look at what you can do today to make tomorrow a little bit better.”

“Real food doesn’t have ingredients. Real food is ingredients.”
