92 — 10 Worst Pieces of Mental Health Advice You’ll Find on Social Media

March 22, 2024

Mental health advice on social media can be downright dangerous. Research has shown that many of the tips and much of the advice on managing mental health just aren’t credible, even though they are popular.

So I decided to call out some of the most popular, yet awful advice I’ve seen being shared on social media lately. Here are 10 pieces of unhealthy mental health advice that are often shared by influencers.

Key Takeaways:

  • 84% of TikTok’s mental health advice is misleading. Critical evaluation of social media content is essential.
  • Self-doubt can be beneficial and doesn’t need to be completely eliminated. It aids in better performance and preparation.
  • Happiness should not be the ultimate goal. Focus on gratitude, generosity, or kindness to promote feelings of happiness.
  • Loneliness and social anxiety need attention and treatment, not acceptance. Attempting to embrace these issues without addressing them can lead to adverse mental and physical health outcomes.
  • Quitting does not equate to failure. Recognizing when to walk away from something can be a sign of mental strength and wisdom.

Notable Quotes:

“Don’t take responsibility for things that aren’t your fault.”

“Working out is a great way to build mental muscle. However, just because you work out a lot doesn’t automatically mean that you’re mentally strong.”

“The research shows if you just had one loving adult in your life, somebody who cared about you, then sometimes that’s all you need to learn what healthy love is.”

“The cure for loneliness is connection.”

“So don’t view quitting as failure.”
