174 — How to Influence People to Change Without Overstepping Your Bounds

January 3, 2025
Amy-Morin-Mentally-Strong-Influence-and-Empower-People-to-Change

Whether you want your partner to quit eating so many sugary treats or you’d like your colleague to have a better attitude, you’re in a powerful position to influence others. While lecturing or nagging doesn’t work (and in fact, those strategies can make things worse), there are proven strategies that can influence other people to change.

Developing a clear plan can help you guide someone to change their behavior without overstepping your bounds.

Some of the things I share are:

  • How to become a powerful influence
  • How to identify what stage of change someone else is in
  • How to employ motivational interviewing strategies that foster self-motivation
  • What to focus on to motivate people to change
  • How to handle setbacks so you can guide people back to creating change

Key Takeaways:

  • You can’t force change, but you can have a powerful influence through healthy relationships and communication.
  • Understand where someone is in their “stages of change” to tailor your support strategies effectively.
  • Engage in motivational interviewing to foster self-motivation and empower individuals to articulate their reasons for change.
  • Focus on one’s core values as a motivator for change and lead by example to inspire action.
  • Recognize that setbacks are natural and provide non-judgmental support to help individuals find their way back.

Notable Quotes:

“Your connection with somebody might be the biggest driving force that motivates them to change.”

“People believe the words coming out of their own mouths much more than they’ll believe the words coming out of somebody else’s mouth.”

“Help someone build confidence through really small wins.”

“At the end of the day, helping somebody else change is about building trust with them, showing them empathy, and encouraging them to take ownership of their life.”
