88 — Mental Toughness vs. Mental Strength

March 8, 2024

Mental toughness serves a purpose in some circumstances. A tough exterior can help you get through a crisis. But mental strength is what is really needed to grow, learn, and thrive in life. The two things are often confused.

Some of the things I share today are the six key differences between mental strength and mental toughness, how to develop more strength, and the dangers of acting tough.

Key Takeaways:

  • Mental toughness is often associated with suppressing emotions, whereas mental strength is about acknowledging and addressing them.
  • Acting tough focuses on reputation management, but building mental strength prioritizes genuine character development.
  • Mental strength involves recognizing when to persevere and when to quit, rather than adhering to the “never quit” mentality often tied to mental toughness.
  • Embracing vulnerabilities and insecurities is a component of mental strength, contrasting with the mental toughness approach of hiding them.
  • Learning from painful experiences is a hallmark of mental strength, in contrast to merely enduring pain as a measure of toughness.

Notable Quotes:

“People who act tough on the outside are often suffering a lot on the inside, but they’re pretending not to be because that’s what it means to act tough.”

“It takes more mental strength to acknowledge and express an emotion than it does to ignore it or pretend that you aren’t experiencing any trouble at all.”

“It takes a lot of courage to do something when you know that you might fail or you think that you’re going to be rejected.”

“Sometimes it takes more mental strength to stand up and say, I’m not going to do that or I’m going to let myself fail.”

“No one loves you because you’re perfect. They’ll actually like you a lot more if you can admit to experiencing some of the same struggles that make you human.”
